Upcoming Herd Sporting Events This Week

This week is setting up to be a big week for Thundering Herd Athletics. Several teams have competitions on their schedule this week.

Men’s Soccer:  This week the Men’s soccer team has two matches, one against VMI on Tuesday at 6 and another verses NKU on Sunday. This evening the Men obtained their second win of the season against VMI, 2-0, thanks to goals from Zach Hunter and Ben Holt. This is the men’s biggest win of the season and takes them to 2-4-1 overall. In their next match, the men play Northern Kentucky at home on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at The Vet.

Women’s Soccer: The Women’s Soccer team has a slow week and will face one team this week, Miami (OH) on Sunday. The team is 4-2-1 on the  season and hopes to extend that record when Miami visits Huntington. The Redhawk’s are 3-4 on the season, and unfortunately have a better away record than home.

Football: The Football team travels to Blacksburg, V.a. this Saturday to face Virginia Tech. The last time the two teams played against each other was in 2011 when the Hokies traveled to Huntington. Marshall lost 30-10 in that game making their record at the time 1-3. This will be the 12th meeting of the two teams. The Hokies head coach, Frank Beamer, has a connection with Marshall University. Former Marshall Coaches Frank Loria and Rick Tolley are both alumni of Virginia Tech along with Beamer. Beamer and Loria played together in the mid 1960’s.  Loria and Tolley passed away on Nov. 14, 1970 when a plane carrying 75 people crashed returning home from a football game.

Volleyball:  The Volleyball team travels to Ann Arbor Michigan to end its non-conference schedule this weekend to play in a very elite competition, The Michigan Invitational. The girl’s face two teams ranked nationally (Michigan and Ohio) on Saturday and another very good team Maryland on Saturday.

Golf:  Who says 13 is an unlucky number? Today, the Men’s Golf Team took home its first win in 13 years at the 13th annual John Piper Intercollegiate. According to Herd Athletics the team shot only one-over-par at 289 in the final round of the tournament to win by 3 strokes.  Valparaiso came in second place.
