Marshall’s win
this past weekend left the fans sure of one thing. The Herd defense is
back. The confident defense racked up 3
interceptions, 3 sacks, 13 tackles for loss, 9 QB hurries and 7 pass breakups.
Many teams take
years to learn how to work as a team on the field, however that isn’t true for
Heaters defense this season. Several of
the players (Evan Mckelvey, Stefan Houston, Neville Hewitt, Darryl Roberts, and
Taj Letman weren’t even part of the playing team last season. In fact 13
defensive players who have made impacts this year were not even part of the
team last year.
Even with
Jeremiah Taylor missing, the defense was still able to dominate throughout the
game.
In the post-game
conference Chuck Heater said that his favorite part of the game was when the
defense held UTSA to just a field goal after Rakeem Cato lost a fumble on
UTSA’s 11 yard-line.
"I mean, they threw the ball, but we were pretty comfortable,
nobody panicked, we just kept playing and developed a certain level of
confidence. That's important, because I think you're going to get a lot of
punches and you've got to keep playing and go on to the next play."
After five
games, the Herd already has nine interceptions by seven different players. That
stat ties the 2012 total. UTSA to
Huntington averaging a wopping 431 yards per game, however the Herd was able to
hold them to just 254.
It seems after
two frustrating losses to Virginia Tech and Ohio, the Herd has finally found
what works best for them, and what will help lead the Herd to a winning record.
